It was 2016, and I was still working full time at Warner Bros. film studios where I had been working for almost a whole decade. As much as I enjoyed working in the film industry, I absolutely hated TWO things about where I worked:
1️⃣ - I was missing out on quality and important times with my children due to long commuting in and out of the city.
2️⃣ - I hated working for someone else, and having a boss telling me what I can... and can't do!
So I decided... Fuck this. I am quitting this corporate rubbish and I should aim for what I have always wanted to do... Run my own business. Become an Entrepreneur.
Those of you WHO don't me... I am also a professional guitar player 🎸. I have toured Europe, played in many bands, written & co-written over 100 songs, recorded in studios, and lived a Rock n Roll lifestyle in my early 20's.
But WHAT I loved more than anything was teaching guitar. In 2007 I started to teach guitar locally in my hometown during my spare time (evenings & weekends). In 2011 I started to teach guitar on YouTube. And that is where I first came across my NOW business mentor, James Wedmore.
James was teaching how to leverage the power of YouTube to grow and market your business better. At the time I was a bit wet behind the ears 👂 and I was still working full time. But with James's coaching, I grew my YouTube channel to over 3million views, 25,000 subscribers, and I started to see this opportunity as a potential business venture.
And it was in 2016 when my luck dramatically change. James Wedmore had opened up the opportunity for 30 individuals to join him in an 8 week BETA program to help him craft an online course that teaches entrepreneurs to build their business by design.
I was one of those lucky 30, and from that moment forward I became obsessed with this BETA formula.
Fast Forward ⏭ 8 weeks and I had the tools, the process, the formula, and EVERYTHING else to launch my own "Founding Members Beta Program!" for guitar players...
AND I TOTALLY SCREWED IT UP!
My BETA Launch Failure:
In business. They say there is no such thing as failure. We don't fail, we learn from our mistakes.
Whichever way you look at it, even when you fail and learn, it still really hurts deep inside 💔
You have this excitement that you have built something with nothing but PURE passion, LOVE, knowledge, years of skills, crafting your own formula or mechanism that you could only wished you had when you first started to learn and master what you are now turning into a business.
😭 And when you fail.. when you don't achieve WHAT you thought would be life-changing... it rips your heart out. It leaves you confused and embarrassed at the same time. What did I do wrong? What did I miss? So many emotions to deal with. 😵

That was the name of my BETA program, my first EVER online product. My first ever online 'anything' for that matter for generating money.
I won't bore you with all the details... Let's skip straight to HOW I went terribly wrong:

My audience DIDN'T want a 'beginners' guide to playing guitar. They didn't NEED my course. They didn't have any desire to buy a course that starts them from zero to guitar hero!

What does the average person do WHEN they get home from the shop after buying a brand spanking new instrument that they have ZERO clue how to play... ?
They either jump onto YouTube and spend the first 4-6 months teaching themselves the basics. OR they hire a local teacher.
So what was my BIG mistake?
I Didn't Survey My Audience Properly…
... I assumed I knew my audience. I assumed that everyone at some stage would need to buy an online course focussing on very beginning basics.
I sold ZERO units of my guitar program.
Assuming I knew what my audience wanted COST me a lot of wasted time and money.
I spent months... and months and MORE months recording, editing, and creating the BEST beginners guitar program. I had put years of teaching into it. And my time and hard work had been wasted.
Embarassingly I went back to the BETA process drawing board. I owned up to my mistakes. I dusted off the dirt and ran a NEW Deep DEEP Survey.
3 Weeks later after surveying my audience, I was ready with a NEW guitar course ready to take on BETA students.
And this time my guitar program was called 'The Rhythm & Strumming Guitar Academy'... and my price point $197.
Aimed at guitar players who felt stuck after 4-6 months of self teaching on YouTube and need real structure to progress (you see how clear I am from running a DEEP survey).
